Static Stars by DrewHopper Static Stars by DrewHopper
Static stars over an old wooden boat on the Nambucca River, Mid North Coast - Australia NSW. I wanted to go to this spot for sunset but unfortunately it was low tide so the boat was beached onshore. I checked the tide times to see what time high tide was, 9:42pm. I used my LED headlight here to light paint the boat, whilst the street light behind me helped brighten the horizon. It was such a beautiful night standing in complete silence with just the sound of the odd fish jumping out of the water. I'm glad the tide forced me out at night to capture this shot.

One of the most clear and beautiful shots of the night sky I ever saw. The stars and their reflection in the water came out just terrific!

Great shot mate. It's really wonderful. I really like the boat not being too 'ghosty'.

But I have a question:
Do you live in an area with a lot of light pollution? I would love to make a shot like this but I live in quite a polluted area when it comes to light. Particularly the regions close to the water are quite light.

Not really much light pollution at this location, although there were street lights behind me. They worked on my behalf though, helped me paint the boat here. Cheers.

since Mr Boat is main subject then the stars I'd try again at a tide where the boat in in water but beached Bro! The ghost boat idea talked about is great but again the boat need to be still for best impact.

Few people have said the same thing. Not a lot I can do when it's raining cats and dogs though, I will re-shoot on a starry night :)

you'll really have to be sweet on your powers of persuasion, but if you could get someone to stand in the boat for half the exposure time then jump into the water you could create kind of "ghost boat" effect.. would be a lot of effort but damn cool imo!

always good to see you trying something new

very nice mate. I like the blurred boat in the foreground. sometimes it works sometimes not. here as you said gives the surreal feeling.

Just looking at this image makes me feel at peace. It must have been very soothing when you took this photograph. In fact, this photograph is a perfect example of what photography is about; making the viewer feel what the photographer felt. You've captured an emotion perfectly. Wonderful. Thankyou for this.

mmm I think that the motion of the boat but the stillness of the stars reinforces the idea that even though you can get caught up in a moment the world keeps on going no matter what. Yup, wouldn't change a thing.

Stunning! I was a little disconcerted by the boat also, but I think it still works - I sort of like the contrast between the soft blurred motion of the boat and the sharp focus of the background! Good work!

Love the sky. It's populated, and lovely. The boat's motion, however, I find somewhat distracting. I'm not sure how you feel about composite images, but if you were so inclined, you could take an image of the boat at a faster shutter, then use a system of layers/masks to blend the sky with a crisp boat.

I quite like the blurred boat in this, gives the image a slightly more surreal feel. Your idea I like too though, I might give that a shot sometime soon :)
